The Friendly Racing Class
The Topper offers a phenomenal race and training scene. The Topper Class is fun and friendly but competitive, and is responsible for developing some of the best young sailors in the world! But, the Class not only produce exceptional sailing talent, they also help sailors acquire key life skills to help them fulfil their true potential including independence, confidence, team work and physical fitness. For more info on the Topper Racing Class, visit http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/youth-junior/Pages/hub.aspx and https://www.itca-gbr.co.uk

The RYA’s British Youth Sailing programme is the envy of the world! And the Topper is an integral part of the programme that gives young dinghy sailors the best possible opportunity to develop their racing talent towards Olympic Class sailing. The Topper 4.2 is the ideal introduction to racing for smaller lightweight sailors from age 9 (35kgs) up. The Topper 4.2 offers the perfect pathway into the Topper 5.3 and then beyond into Classes such as the Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Laser or 29er. Rio Olympic Gold medallist Giles Scott is yet another excellent example of young sailors following the Topper pathway with great success.

Perfect for beginners and families
While the Topper is predominantly a racing class now she offers so much more than just that. She is so simple, safe and stable that she inspires confidence in young or novice sailors. She offers pedigree handling and racy performance levels as competence levels grow – which other ‘beach-boats’ can only dream of. Above all, the Topper is still a boat to have great fun sailing.

Rugged and durable construction
The boat is stronger and lighter than any other comparable boat. So she is easier to handle on the water and ashore. The Topper is virtually maintenance free. AND a proven track record of reliability means that resale values are sky high.

Cartoppable
The Topper hull weighs in at just 43kgs and is the perfect design for cartopping. In fact, this fantastic feature is where the name ‘Topper’ originates from. You can just pop the Topper on to the roof of your car and transport your sailboat cheaply and effortlessly wherever you decide.

True One Design – because the Topper is injection moulded, every boat is identical. The ‘one-design’ nature of the boat makes for a uniquely fair competition.

Fun – with a 5.3sqm sail it has good upwind and downwind performance, making it a thrilling, accessible and exciting sail.

Fast – the lightweight hull and the large sail area make the Topper a fast boat for its size, and being so close to the water just makes it feel so much more exciting.

Simple – with a single hull and sail provider, measurement is simple and conducted with minimum of fuss.

Value – a race rigged Topper is the cheapest single handed racing dinghy in its category.

Durability – its unique polypropylene construction makes the boat virtually indestructible.

Low Maintenance – It requires little maintenance, is easily rigged in a matter of minutes, is rugged and safe for beginners and an exciting race boat too as your skills develop AND it is car-toppable. It truly is the most versatile of sailboats.

Build Quality – After almost 40 years of continuous production (approaching 50,000 boats!) it is the outstanding build quality, durability and innovative design features that have made the Topper one of the most popular boats in Britain.

Lightweight – at just 43kg (compared to similar boats that weigh upwards of 60kg) the cartoppable Topper is the lightest boat of its size and configuration in the world. It is easily righted after a capsize and ideal for sailors from 40kg to 60kg.

Award winning – it has won many awards for innovative design and construction, including the world renowned Design Council Award.

International – nearly 50,000 boats worldwide, a well-established international class structure across Europe, the Middle East, Far East, America and Australasia, Topper sailing is truly international. The Topper is an ISAF Full International Class.

Competitive – with over 300 boats competing at this year’s National Championships and 173 boats competing for this year’s World Championship – the Topper is one of the most competitive classes for young sailors.

Pathway – the success of the Topper as a high-performance race-training pathway class has been proven in the UK. An incredibly high proportion of sailors selected for the RYA Transitional Youth Squads were Topper sailors.

Development – The Topper has always been a great boat. A number of changes that will ensure that it continues to be a great boat into the foreseeable future. These include:

Centre main sheet – moving the mainsheet lead to the centre of the boat and fitting a longer tiller extension permits the sailor to position themselves correctly in the boat without unnecessary twisting whilst hiking means the sailor can get more from the boat and hike harder for longer.

6:1 Downhaul – without doubt the second most important update is the change from a maximum purchase of a 3:1 to one of 6:1. It will allow much lighter and less experienced sailors to sail in strong winds. The extra force available means we can bend the mast to flatten the sail whilst keeping the fullness in the sail well forward. The effect will be to stop the boat heading into the wind on a beat and getting stuck in irons when tacking.

4.2m2 sail
The introduction of the 4.2m2 sail allows eight and nine year old Topper sailors and the smaller older ones to compete alongside the bigger sailors. The small sail is really inexpensive and it’s pretty quick in the hands of a 30-40kg sailor. It also doesn’t require a new mast or a change of controls.

Whether just messing about in boats, having fun off a beach, learning to sail, flat out blasting or competitive racing, there are so many reasons for choosing the fantastic Topper.

“Topper sailors getting medals at the Olympics would be very gratifying, but at the end of the day it’s the hundreds and hundreds of sailors who are having fun, enjoying it more and more because they are better at it. When these youngsters hit the adult classes, I don’t think the adult classes will quite know what has hit them.” Dave Cockerill, UK RYA National Coach

“Young sailors can really quickly handle the boat well, then they can get on and concentrate on the racing. They are good at tactics and they are good at strategy, much earlier than they would be in a more complicated boat.” RYA National Coach

“These sailors just jump in, get stuck in at marks where the action is. It is simple, inexpensive and fun to sail.” RYA National Coach

“You can have a twenty year old Topper that will go just as fast as a new Topper. It’s an amazingly strong thoroughbred boat.” Martin Fry, Manufacturer

“It’s really easy, you can put it on the roof of your car or put it on a trailer. It takes ten minutes, if that, to rig… great boats to sail. So much fun.” Topper sailor

“The unique construction makes it almost indestructible. It is the ONLY injection moulded racing boat.” Martin Fry, Manufacturer

“The Topper is a great boat. It really is. In terms of junior classes it is one of the only boats where the parents can actually go on the water and sail at the same time as their children.”
Parent of Topper sailor

“I just really like it as it’s such a competitive class. And there are a lot of nationalities involved… the Irish, English, French, Japanese, Dutch, Americans, Australians… you name it.” Topper sailor

“The standard in the Topper fleet means you can guarantee that most of the single handed champions in Britain and top participants in the Laser Class will have come from the Topper.”

SPACIOUS, DURABLE, SIMPLE, SAFE AND STABLE
The Taz can be sailed by two people and can also be sailed singlehanded. On one hand, a child as light as 30kg can handle a Taz, and on the other the Taz has capacity to carry 90kg, meaning that two children or an adult and child can sail together.

The hull is deceptively spacious and has the same cockpit capacity as some more expensive rivals. The unrivalled Topaz TRILAM construction produces a supremely durable hull with high levels of buoyancy. At just 40kg, the hull is also impressively lightweight making the boat manageable afloat and ashore even for young children.

The Taz comes with mainsail and jib as standard. The hard wearing Dacron mainsail is favoured by first-time sailors and schools. The rig is simple and lightweight enough to be operated by a child single-handedly, although the Taz is often used as a two person trainer or recreational dinghy.

It uses the same foils as the Topper, which are capable of dealing with all the knocks and bumps of beginner sailing. The self-draining cockpit, righting lines and grab rails making it extremely safe to sail.

The Taz comes with the highest specification equipment fitted as standard making the boat a pleasure to sail and keeping gear failure to an absolute minimum. The boat also comes with a 3-year hull warranty.

Simple and Fun
Even the smallest sailor feels safe, comfortable and confident in the superb TAZ. Her ultra-modern good looks will instantly ignite interest. Once on the water, the superbly responsive TAZ comes into her own to delight and win over yet another new convert to the sport of sailing.

Spacious Self Draining Cockpit
The TAZ feels much bigger aboard than she really is. The ‘Topaz-Style’ self draining cockpit is spacious, uncluttered and comfortable. There is more than enough room for teacher and pupil to sail together without feeling cramped or restricted. An extra high boom gives an even greater feeling of space and allows the centreboard to be fitted before you go sailing.

Uniquely rugged construction
The precision moulded TRILAM Metalicene hull construction gives unrivalled strength to weight ratio and great uniformity, buoyancy and stiffness.

Carry Handles
‘Topaz-Style’ Carry Handles are fitted on bow and stern for easy launching and retrieval.

Inspection Hatches
Stowage pouches fit into inspection hatches for storing keys, cold drinks etc.

Proven Lifting Rudder System
The easy to lift rudder system – as used on the Topper – keeps the rugged moulded blade in perfect condition. This sturdy rudder fitting is amongst the best on any production model sailboat.

Easy and quick to rig
Rigging the TAZ could not be any quicker or more simple. Within a matter of minutes you can get the boat rigged and on the water.

Easily cartoppable
The lightweight Taz sailboat is easily cartoppable. Getting the Taz from storage to the water and back is a breeze.

Hassle-free maintenance
The hi-tech roto-moulded polyethylene hull is unsinkable and far stronger and longer lasting than other boats on the market. The hull is virtually indestructible, even against the harshest knocks and scrapes inflicted by novices. But, in the unlikely need of a repair, the workability of polyethylene makes any repairs effortless. Tried and tested Topper Topaz fittings and fixtures ensure that failures are kept to a minimum.

Fast track progression
The TAZ is the perfect introduction to Topper sailing. The renowned Topper Junior Racing Class is well established and recognised by the RYA and ISAF. There is no better Topper apprenticeship than the TAZ.

SAILING WORLD Best Dinghy 2015 Winner
Roto-molded boats are a dime a dozen these days, but they’re essential to the base of the sport, particularly sailing schools, so getting a new model to standout is a challenge for companies like Topper. The boat has to be remarkably stiff, strong, fun to sail, and reasonably priced. The Argo, our judges agreed, hit on all four points.

The Argo is only 14 feet, but it’s a generous 14 feet with 6 feet of beam. Its buoyancy was good, and seating, inside and on the cockpit coaming, was comfortable. With the Gnav vang up and boom up high, was easy to get across the boat.

In 10 knots and flat water the judges rotated through, disembarking with broad smiles. “The boat moves along great,” said Allen. “The hull chine works; it heels until the chine digs and then it tracks perfectly. It’s a lot stiffer than roto-molded boats we’ve sailed in the past.”

Stewart agreed: “The tiller feels good, the boat balances nicely, and it’s lively with the spinnaker. I can see younger sailors would jump in it and have a blast.”

“It’s more than a youth training boat,” said Allen. “We were hiked, kite up, weight back, and the thing just ripped along. Nice and stable. I’d say it’s more of an intermediate dinghy. It can be dumbed down for lessons, but with the bigger kite, two adults would have fun with it, especially with the traps.”

SAIL magazine BEST Small Boat 2015 Winner
“Fast, well mannered, easy to sail and good looking, this is the kind of a boat that will appeal to sailors of all ages and backgrounds.”

“Like the venerable Flying Scot, the boat is exceedingly stable for its 14ft 4in LOA, thanks to an aggressive chine and a generous 6ft of beam that also provides for plenty of sail-carrying ability. The rig has been configured for easy singlehanding, but the boat can also be raced by a crew of two, and there is plenty of room in the cockpit for three or even four sailors, making it an excellent trainer.”

“For years—since the advent of yachting, really—it’s been all too evident that just about anyone can create a high-octane sailing beast that will thrill its crew when the wind is up. Far more challenging, however, is a boat that can give its crews a thrill while not scaring the wits out of less experienced sailors. The Topaz Argo is one of those rare boats that not only does both, but does both well.” SAIL Magazine

Yachts & Yachting Verdict
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
“I am happy to give the Argo a top overall score for price, performance, durability, fittings and user-friendliness. But is it your kind of boat? I would recommend the Argo for two adults or teenagers up to about 75kg apiece, who may like to sail with a couple of children.”

“It would be a good boat for novice sailors who want a challenge, with the promise of rewarding and exciting sailing ahead, without things getting dangerous or nerve-wracking for crew. Equally, it could be a good choice for dinghy sailors with intermediate ability who are looking for a really easy-to-own boat that ticks almost all the boxes for occasional fun.” Yachts & Yachting

The OMEGA is the ultimate family day sailor. She provides you with so many sailing options. She’s equally happy cruising or pottering, racing or blasting. Fast, fun sailing with a gennaker and trapeze or a relaxed day with your family and friends – you decide. The famous Howlett design hull stability means that Omega sailing is always fun and relaxing and drama free.

“The Topaz OMEGA is big, roomy and comfortable enough for all kinds of family sailing, which means it should be equally useful for sailing schools and holiday operators like Sunsail.” Simon Letten SUNSAIL

“The Topaz Omega is now the definitive RYA teaching boat and the ultimate all rounder. The Omega is also my choice of boat for sailing at my local club” Simon Letten SUNSAIL

Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club – 30 Omegas to Sweden’s premier sailing club. “We have had all the boats on the water with our instructors now. Everyone loves the Omega.”

Spanish Sailing Federation’s of Galicia, Andalucia and Murcia – 40 Omegas “The combination of stability and performance is perfect for newcomers and more seasoned sailors alike and the carrying capacity is fantastic.”

Qatar Sailing Federation UAE – “The boats are a great success with loads of young people taking to the water. Had the maiden voyage in gusty conditions and it was much more fun than with our previous classes.”

UK Sailing Centres – Over 200 Omegas – Scottish National SC, Royal Yorkshire YC, Pembroke WS, Carsington S&L, Oxford & DS, Derwent Res, Master Sun, Mark Warner, Medina Valley, Surrey Docks WS, Trafford WS, Southend MA, Royal Victoria Docks, Felixstowe Ferry, Enfield Scouts, Doe Park WAC, Nottingham SC, Neptune YS, Walsall OP, Grangewater OEC, Wirral SC, Grangewater OEC, etc etc.

It’s not only the schools who rate the TOPAZ OMEGA. This is what the yachting experts think:

“So can a polyethylene boat compete against its GRP sisters? YOU BET IT CAN, IT IS JUST AS GOOD TO SAIL, AND MUCH CHEAPER. For the holiday companies and sailing schools which will be major buyers, its price and its longevity should be a big advantage. For them the Topaz Omega’s ability to carry a four man crew comfortably will be another big plus for teaching, while its good performance, its gennaker, and its trapeze option will allow pupils at sailing schools to use it for more advanced classes, as well as just for starting to sail.” YACHTING LIFE

“The boat is big enough to replace a Wayfarer, and its value for money will ensure that it often will. For private buyers its flexibility is impressive, and while it could cruise and motor comfortably under outboard, I would happily race it too, something I didn’t expect. The Topaz Omega is a resounding hit in my book. If you are thinking about a family boat, or a boat to buy for your club or sailing school the Omega should be well up the list.” YACHTING LIFE

“The Omega is quite capable of replacing the current learning boats like the Wayfarer and the Stratos. The polyethylene construction gives the Omega a big price advantage against its longer established competitors, and the knock-proof nature the material means much less maintenance than on GRP boats” YACHTING LIFE

“The Topaz Omega is a boat which pretty much all ages could enjoy – one up, two up, three up, four up or more up. Topper should do very nicely with this one. The Topaz Omega is a superb boat with loads of room, good performance, good looks, excellent systems and fittings at a very good price.” YACHTS and YACHTING

“If you are looking for a modern sailboat that is more than capable of replacing the current learning boats like the Wayfarer and Stratos – then look no further than the new Topaz OMEGA.” DINGHY MAGAZINE

“With a lower purchase price and less maintenance, it already sounds heaven sent for sailing schools and holiday companies. And Topper have got it right first time no question. It sails perefctly and comes ready to go with all the right kit.” DINGHY MAGAZINE

“The OMEGA hits the multi purpose teaching, cruising and racing market on the nail.” DINGHY MAGAZINE

Topaz VIBE

UK RRP from £4,895 inc vat

ISAF ‘Learn to Sail’ Class
As used by Sunsail, Mark Warner, Neilson, RYA OnBoard
Internationally Award Winning Design – Coup de Coeur Best Dinghy Winner
“Loads of easily controlled power” Yachts & Yachting

VERSATILITY WITHOUT COMPROMISE.
PERFORMANCE, CONTROL AND COMFORTABLE CAPACITY
• A great introduction to performance sailing.
• Performance and Control.
• Beamy and chined hull for reassuring stability.
• It is designed as a hiking performance double hander but can also be sailed with a single trapeze.
• Very robust, maintenance free TRILAM construction – Read more
• ISAF ‘Learn to Sail’ Class

The Vibe offers a great introduction to performance sailing. It is designed as a hiking performance double hander but can also be sailed with a single trapeze. The Mylar mainsail area can be reduced by up to 20% using the innovative zip reefing system, meaning that the boat can be altered to suit virtual novices, club racers and even set up as a singlehander.

The Vibe is a great choice for schools providing two person race tuition. The beamy hull inspires great confidence in young, lightweight or inexperienced sailors. And the chine in the hull provides even greater stability meaning that the Vibe stays sailing, no matter who is at the helm, when many of its competitors would capsize. It is a versatile boat that is fast and fun, but very stable and easy to manage.

The huge, spacious cockpit with its gnav kicker offers roomy and comfortable sailing for two adults. There’s plenty of room at the back of the cockpit for an adult helm and enough gunwale space for a crew to enjoy life on the wire. The Vibe is also lightweight, making it easy to launch for adults or children and can be easily rigged using the hinged mast foot.

A more powerful Vibe X rig is also available. The VIBE X utilises the same hull as the original Vibe which has proven to be exceptionally stable, light and compact – with the addition of a larger and more powerful rig. The extra power which allows the boat to plane even earlier and sail even faster is ideal for lighter wind conditions, heavier sailors or to challenge crews as they grow in confidence.

The larger rig results in a 20 per cent increase in sail area, with the taller mast fitted with lowers, shrouds and spreaders for greater control of mast bend and compression. This makes it easier to depower the mainsail upwind, with enough support for a lighter crew to trapeze without distorting the rig, plus a longer pole to fly a considerably larger asymmetric spinnaker.

The standard Vibe is a great choice for young, lightweight and inexperienced sailors who want instantly accessible exciting sailing. The Vibe X option generates even higher performance to take you to the next level of progression – while still retaining the excellent stability and forgiveness of the beamy and chined Vibe hull. The result; far more control and fewer spills than you’d expect from a boat with this much oomph.

Topper’s unmatched TRILAM construction offers great buoyancy and resilience for training. Standard features include an epoxy centreboard and rudder, righting lines, grab rails, sealed one-piece mast and sails equipped with a flotation device.

The Vibe will undoubtedly appeal equally to hot shot youngsters, couples and parent & child combinations. The ideal weight combination falling between 19-23 stone (120-135kg). The really spacious cockpit and high boom and the all important extra WIDE BEAM mean the power is easy to handle and guarantee a comfortable and stable platform for all age groups.

  • Great value hiking boat which offers a great introduction to performance sailing.
  • Rig options to suit beginners, club racers and one or two crew.
  • Extra WIDE BEAMY HULL to handle power and guarantee comfort.
  • CHINE TECHNOLOGY means the VIBE stays afloat when competitors capsize.
  • ZIP REEFING system for the Mylar mainsail enables up to 20% reduction in sail area, meaning the boat can easily be sailed singlehanded.
  • Spacious and well equipped cockpit.
  • Safe, stable and reassuring hull shape.

The Topaz XENON is a hiking boat which offers exhilarating performance, bags of fun – yet is user friendly, controllable, forgiving and great value for money. But don’t just take our word for it:

“It was a delight to sail the production Xenon on a fine summer’s day. The Xenon has all the makings of a dual purpose boat. It has great potential as a one design racing class with good looks, enjoyable performance and a well sorted platform. The beamy hull is stable, with plenty of room for the crew. The unexpected face of the Xenon is that it could also be a really nice general purpose boat for family sailing.” YACHTS & YACHTING

“With its combination of power and ease of handling, plus its status as the boat of choice for the Endeavour Trophy, the Xenon looks set to become a modern classic club racer. If it is good enough for the best of the best it is certainly good enough for me.” DINGHY MAGAZINE

“From the moment I stepped into the Xenon, its uncompromising stability became immediately apparent. The stability certainly reflects in the sailing performance; upwind the boat feels well balanced, whilst downwind the sizeable gennaker gives significant extra power without feeling intimidating. The Xenon also planes readily and perks up in the smallest of gusts. Gybing downwind is a pleasure, with the chined hull digging into the water allowing you to roll the boat and perform the manoeuvre without even thinking about it.” DINGHY MAGAZINE

“Topper’s Xenon is the widest dinghy ever made by rotomoulding, but this is not just another cruisy plastic boat. The Xenon Sport rig comes with jib, mylar main and a black kite, and was selected as the one-design for the Endeavour ‘champion of champions’ Trophy.” YACHTS & YACHTING

“The 2005 Endeavour Trophy proved a great success, with the event being completely rejuvenated, primarily due to a change of boat. This year the boat selected for the event was the new Topaz Xenon. Topper’s fantastic support included providing new boats for everyone at the event, certainly a brave way to introduce their new Xenon, i.e. let 26 National Champions race them at this prestigious championship and then see what they think of the boat. However, Topper pulled it off, with very positive comments at the end of the series, and having pre sold all the boats, the new owners arrived at the Royal Corinthian, eager to get their hands on their new race machines.” YACHT & YACHTING

“Formidable style… Precise well mannered and easy to drive upwind with good speed and excellent stability. Best of all the Topaz Xenon has a knockout price which looks great value.” YACHTS & YACHTING

“Huge price advantage over older competitors like the 2000 and 400.” YACHTS & YACHTING

• ISAF ‘Learn to Sail’ Class.

The Topaz Catamarans have been designed by International multihull racing legends Yves Loday and Robert White. With such sailing experience and pedigree, not to mention their proven design track records, it comes as little surprise that the Loday/White team have produced such a stunning range of cats.

The TOPAZ 12 is the smallest catamaran in the Topper range and is aimed at introducing youngsters to catamaran sailing at as early an age as possible.

The Topaz 12 looks immaculate and has tremendous stability designed into the hulls with lots of volume in the bow to give the sailors a really confident feeling on the helm from the off.

The key to the Topaz 12 is her simplicity. Rigging is quick and easy. The 12 features a manageable and durable Dacron Radial cut Mainsail and cross-cut jib, a sealed mast and a safe and simple lifting rudder system.

“Forget all those old catamaran preconceptions. Topaz cats are a joy to flick from tack to tack” Y&Y

“Pedigree is what counts, Rob White and Yves Loday have put decades of experience into the Topaz cats” Y&Y

The Topaz 12 in many ways is a simpler scaled down version of the Topaz 14 and 16 so many of the comments from the independent test reports on the 12’s larger siblings are also relevant.

The Topaz Catamarans have been designed by International multihull racing legends Yves Loday and Robert White. With such sailing experience and pedigree, not to mention their proven design track records, it comes as little surprise that the Loday/White team have produced such a stunning range of cats.

The TOPAZ 14 is an accessible but high performance cat designed for two medium to light crew. There is room on the trampoline for three for cruising. The Topaz 14C has a twin trapeze and a powerful 11.50m2 sail area courtesy of a large Dacron main and jib. The 14CX has a decent 10.00m2 gennaker to provide a more powered up downwind ride.

The TOPAZ 14 XTREME is a souped up singlehanded variation. The XTREME version has a superb fathead Mylar mainsail coupled with a 9.90m2 asymmetric gennaker plus a trapeze to take full advantage of the staggering amounts of available power. The 14 XTREME is a sublime creation suited to a wide range of crew weights.

The Topaz cats are all roto-moulded in tri-laminated Metalicene™polyethylene producing the stiffest, lightest and most dynamic hulls available. The hulls are also extremely robust and low maintenance making them ideal for even the toughest sailing school environments.

“Forget all those old catamaran preconceptions. Topaz cats are a joy to flick from tack to tack” Y&Y

“The Topaz 16 was the first cat to bridge the gap between low cost rotomoulded hull construction and true performance cat sailing, a feat emulated by the smaller 14”

“The ride of a lifetime” Y&Y

On the water it feels stiffer, lighter and more dynamic than any rotomoulded cat produced by Dart or Hobie, with taut feedback that qualifies as ‘true performance’ sailing” Y&Y
